10 Minute Solutions: Blast Off Belly Fat
with trainer Suzanne Bowen
You will love it if:
Suzanne Bowen—the instructor in the video—is the only actress in the video, so she performs all of the exercises while simultaneously explaining them. She is pretty easy to follow—I got confused only on a single crunch move that alternated between fast and slow crunches. Occasionally, Suzanne offers a tip for modifying a move to make it easier or harder—but for the most part, you will be following her cues. Bowen has a very positive and encouraging personality and spends most of the time cuing the moves or explaining the form. There is little joke making or playful banter like there is in some videos that include multiple models.
Each workout starts and ends with a 30-60 second warm-up and cool-down stretch. There is a nice variety of workouts on this video that include all possible variations of abdominal work I can think of, so it would be tough to get bored. One nice feature is that the video allows you to “play all,” “pick one workout,” or “create a personalized workout”—you select which of the workouts you want to do in the order you want to do them. The music has a techno, club sort of beat and no lyrics. The studio that the videos were shot in is a little tacky, and the colors of the mat and outfits aren’t always the best selection, but I didn’t really notice all of that while I was doing the workouts.
This video is great for traveling or living in a dorm or apartment. It requires little space, uses only equipment that can be found pretty much anywhere (a soft rug or surface and a towel), and is low impact (so you won’t be disturbing the guests in the room beneath you). This might also be a good video for you if you are short on time and have difficulty motivating yourself to workout. It’s easy enough and short enough that you won’t dread doing the workouts so much because you know that in only 10 minutes you can cross “exercise” off your list. If you dread working out so much that you usually end up skipping it, then this would be a great alternative. Ten minutes of light to moderate exercise is a whole lot better than none!
*The above is the order the workouts appear in the video. They are listed in a different order on the back of the DVD case.
You will want a soft carpet or yoga mat to protect your joints while doing the mat work. One of the videos also uses a rolled up towel.
You will need enough space to lie down with your legs outstretched and do lunges backward, forward, and side to side. You should be able to stand comfortably and even lift your hands above your head a little, but this video does not include high-impact jumping movements, so you will not need a lot of space overhead.
Everyone can attempt at least some of the workouts on this DVD. Several of the workouts are no impact—for those with joint problems—and several are mat workouts—for those who have difficulty standing. Even the standing work included in some of the workouts is at a low intensity with low to moderate impact, so most people will be able to do the standing work.
What NOT to Expect
This is not a cardio intense workout or a full-body workout. You will be focusing on toning your abdominal muscles (not your arms, legs, or bootie). You will have to work at the moves and may feel a bit of a burn in your abs, but don’t expect to get your heart-rate up much. This is also a beginner to intermediate series of workouts and is not meant for advanced athletes.
How does 10 Minute Solutions: Blast Off Belly Fat compare to other similar programs?
10 Minute Solutions Blast Off Belly Fat is a great all-around program for beginning to intermediate athletes who want to add a quick ab workout to their workout routine. Sexy Abs is a fairly similar program that is a bit easier for true beginners or those who are just getting back into shape. The workouts on Sexy Abs are twice as long (20 minutes instead of 10) and include a lot more stretching.
For a bit more relaxing, low-impact mat workout that is still fairly challenging, you might try Maintenance Pilates for Weight Loss or another Pilates DVD. Pilates is great for you posture and works your entire core (hips, back…), not just your abs, but doesn’t include any of the cardio that you’ll find in 10 Minute Solutions Blast Off Belly Fat. Hip Hop Abs Ultimate Results is also a great alternative for a more fun and upbeat way of working your abs while getting your groove on. They are one of my favorite DVDs in terms of fun factor. Having a workout that is fun is especially helpful if you have trouble staying motivated continue working out.
If you want something a that includes more strength training moves for your core, you might try Killer Abs or Totally Ripped Core. For a cardio heavy and super intense workout (one of the most intense ab workouts on the market), try 6-Week Six Pack.
