You will love it if:
This was, by far, the easiest workout I have ever done. But the moves are pretty basic, and I can see this being a good starting workout for someone who is 100+ pounds overweight and hasn’t worked out in a while. (If you are simply out of shape or overweight, but not both, even the level 3 workout on this video will probably be too easy.) The instructors are cheerful, but the lighting in the studio is pretty lousy and the filming was obviously done on a tiny budget. The film quality is sort of reminiscent of a high school project. The workouts also includes something weird that I have not seen done before—when the workout includes the same set of moves repeated a second time, the video editors actually play the exact same video footage twice. Like I said: filmed on a teeny, tiny budget.
Though the video says that the trainer is Kenya Moore, she actually instructs very few of the moves. A different actress, who she says is her personal trainer, does most of the instructing. The instructor demonstrates most of the moves ahead of time while the other actresses in the video continue doing the previous move. The idea is that you follow the rest of the cast while the instructor demonstrates the proper form for the next move before asking you to join in. However, I am used to the instructor demonstrating each move while you begin performing the move, so I was confused by these pre-move instructions and kept switching moves with the instructor instead of waiting until the rest of the cast switched to the new move. (It’s even confusing to describe what was going on in the video!)
Another thing that was different in this video—compared with other workout videos—is that Kenya and the instructor do not do the mirror image of what you are doing. Normally, the instructor will cue the right side and then the cast will do the left side so that you are doing a mirror image of what they are doing. This makes the moves easier to follow (at least it does for me). However, in this video, they cue the right side and then also do their own right side. I simply ignored the cues and did a mirror image of what they were doing so I wouldn’t get confused about what I should do.
The video gives you the option of selecting a specific workout, or playing all of the workouts straight through (though I’m not sure why you would want to do all 86 minutes of these workouts all at once…).
You will need a comfortable rug or mat to provide some cushion while doing all of the floor work. Other than that, all you need is your self!
If you can lie flat on your back and extend your arms out to the side you should have enough space for the video. There aren’t any moves that require you to jump or lift your hands above your head, so as long as your ceiling is high enough for you to stand (hopefully it is!), you should be fine.
Anyone is in good enough shape to try this program. And I mean anyone! Even if you can barely walk, the “Level 1” workout includes mostly moves that are done while lying down. Some of the other workouts include things like lunges or squats, but there are only a few, so the workouts never get too crazy. The workouts also move at a fairly slow pace, so even if you have trouble walking and moving around comfortably, you should be able to keep up with the workouts.
What NOT to Expect
Don’t expect to get much of a workout doing this video. It is really intended as a starter video for someone who has not worked out in a while, is very overweight, and basically just needs a simple workout that will get him/her moving. Don’t expect this video to give you a smoking hot booty—you will not feel a burn in your butt or legs while doing this video.
