with trainer Brooke Burke
You will love it if:
This DVD set provides a good variety of beginning workouts since each one is quite different from the others. The workouts feature Brooke Burke instructing and four other actresses, all with different body types, completing the workout. I appreciated the variety in body types because it showed that women with all different types of bodies can look fantastic. Overall, Brooke has a slightly sassy but encouraging personality that is fun to workout with.
Brooke demonstrates each move before having you join in, but I just started each move while she was demonstrating it since I hate wasting time doing nothing in the middle of a workout. Brooke stretches for about 3 minutes at the beginning of each workout and between 2 and 5 minutes at the end. In all of the workouts, she does each move for only 30 seconds and includes quite a few short brakes between moves. The stretching, short duration of each move, and mini-brakes throughout the workouts make the workouts very manageable and give them a relaxing feel. There are also options to play the workouts with the instructions and music or just the music.
For two of the workouts, and Cardio Crunch and Sweet 16, you will need a set of small handweights. For all of the workouts, you will want a soft carpet or yoga mat to protect your joints during the floor work.
You should be able to lay down with your hands stretched above you head and stretched out to your sides. You won’t need much overhead space because the workouts don’t include much jumping.
These workouts will be manageable to even the most beginning athlete since they move at fairly slow pace and include plenty of stretching. The Cardio Core workout is the most challenging and may be too difficult for you if you have difficulty walking for 15 minutes at a time. You should also be able to stand up, sit down, and rollover from your stomach to your back (and vice-versa) easily if you plan to use this workout video.
What NOT to Expect
Don’t expect to get ripped or burn tons of calories doing these workouts. They will help you firm up and get your blood pumping a bit, but they are on the “enjoyable” end of the workout spectrum--not the “challenging” end.
How does Sexy Abs compare to other similar programs?
Sexy Abs is one of the easier ab programs that is great for beginners or those who are just getting back into shape. For a bit more challenging workout that is about the same length as Sexy Abs, you might try a Pilates video such as Maintenance Pilates for Weight Loss or Winsor Pilates Basic 3 DVD Set. Another difference is that Pilates includes very few standing or cardio moves while Sexy Abs does include some. For a shorter workout that gets it done in half the time and is a bit more challenging than Sexy Abs, try 10 Minute Solutions Blast Off Belly Fat. It also includes 5 very different workouts so you’ll have a variety of workouts to choose from.
If you want something a bit harder that includes more standing and strength training moves, you might try Killer Abs or Totally Ripped Core. Hip Hop Abs is a great alternative for a more fun and upbeat way of working your abs while getting your groove on. They are one of my favorite DVDs in terms of fun factor. Having a workout that is fun is especially helpful if you have trouble staying motivated continue working out.
