with trainers Beto Perez & Joy Prouty
You will love it if:
This Zumba DVD set includes two workouts plus a great instructional DVD that breaks down the basic Latin Dance moves for Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, and Flamenco to help you get accustomed to the moves before attempting the workouts. The instructional video is about 40 minutes long and could even be a great stand-alone video for someone interested in learning basic Latin Dance techniques. Beto does such a great job of breaking the moves down that I would even recommend the instructional video for someone who has trouble coordinating dance moves. However, learning the moves using the instructional video and attempting to follow the choreography in the workouts can be two totally different things. So be forewarned that if you have trouble imitating dance moves or have poor coordination, it might be challenging and/or frustrating for you to follow the workouts. These workouts are better for those who enjoy dancing and can imitate the movements of others fairly easily.
The set is intended for older adults and includes a few modifications that make it better for an older population: the moves are low-impact to protect joints; “balance” moves are added to help prevent seniors from falling while doing normal daily activities; and each workout opens with some safety tips to ensure that you will be working out as safely as possible. There are also informational interviews on “Healthy Living Tips” included in the DVD set. Joy interviews experts on Happiness Factor, Mind-Body Wellness, Nutrition, Brain Health, and Enhancing Longevity. Each interview is 10-15 minutes long.
The moves in this set also seemed less sensual to me than they are in some of the other Zumba videos I’ve done—less hip and bootie shaking—so I can also see this video appealing more to men than some of the other Zumba videos.
Both Beto and Joy have friendly, positive personalities and are fun to workout with. The music is tons of fun to workout with (lots of Latin rhythms, of course). And the models in the video include both males and females of a variety of ages and ethnicities.
The Gold-Toning workout uses Zumba Toning Sticks which are basically little handweights with maracas for heads so they shake around and make a little noise while you do the workout. You can Toning Sticks that are 1 pound each or 2.5 pounds each. I personally am not into the toning sticks and don’t use them at all. I just wear 2.5 pound ankleweights around my hands instead. You could also use regular old handweights.
It’s also important to have footwear that is slippery enough to pivot on the floor you are using without being so slippery that you slip and fall! I recommend sneakers on carpet or hardwoods and socks or dance shoes on linoleum or other similar surfaces.
While you can squeeze these dance moves into a smallish space (maybe 6 feet by 4 feet), more space is definitely better. You don’t want to feel cramped while you’re getting your groove on!
You need to be able to stand and move around comfortably for at least 40 to 45 minutes to complete these workouts. If you have mobility issues or a lot of difficulty with balance, these workouts are not for you.
What NOT to Expect
Don’t expect to feel like a teenager again or to become a professional dancer while doing Zumba. Your biceps will not be bulging. You will not be running faster than a cheetah. And you won’t be dancing like Fred Astaire. The moves are basic, fun Latin dance moves that get you moving and boost your heartrate. There are many more challenging workouts that include harder dance moves or leave your panting for breath. But they are probably not as safe or as fun!
How does Zumba Fitness Total Body Transformation compare to other similar programs?
If you love Latin Dancing or Zumba classes, you'll probably enjoy these workouts. They are great beginners workouts, and have some additional adaptations that make them good for Senior citizens. If you are looking for a fun dance video but aren't really into Latin Dance, you should try Hip Hop Abs. It is a ton of fun and also a great program for beginners. It includes modified low-impact moves as well, so it would also be good for Senior citizens. Rockin' Body and Hip Hop Abs Ultimate Results are also really fun but a bit more challenging than Zumba Gold. Rockin' Body is a little old school and a bit cheesy, but I loved it anyway. Hip Hop Abs Ultimate Results is probably the hardest dance workout programs on DVD. Hip Hop Abs and Hip Hop Abs Ultimate Results really focus on working your ab muscles and also include some bonus dance routines that you can learn. They are really challenging and look amazing! Between me and you, I sit at home and practice the routines just to watch myself look cool in the mirror....but I would never bust my moves out in public ;-)
